What do we do?

We inspect and test your equipment to the following procedure. Please remember that, like your car's MOT, a PAT test shows the status of your equipment on the day it is tested. Its continuing safety is dependent on how it is used and looked after between inspections and tests.
All equipment must be unplugged from the electricity supply and all IT equipment must also be disconnected from any communications links. Any that are not cannot be tested; we will do a visual inspection only on these items.
Formal Visual Inspection
1. We will inspect to consider if the equipment is suitable for the environment it is in.
2. We will check you housekeeping, paying particular attention to
(i) Cable runs.
(ii) Accessible isolation switching.
(iii) Space for ventilation.
(iv) Risk of spillage from cups, plant pots etc.
(v) Cable strain.
(vi) Covers and guards.
(vii) Use of multi way adaptors.
3. We check that the equipment is suitable for it's environment and the work it is expected to do.
4. We will check how the equipment can and will be disconnected from the supply.
5. We will inspect the condition of the equipment, paying particular attention to the following
(i) Cable condition.
(ii) Socket outlet.
(iii) The appliance.
(iv) The standard plug.
6. The suitability of the equipment.
7. We may question the users about their opinion.
After the visual inspection we will test your equipment by applying voltages.
Earth Continuity For class I equipment or cords.
Insulation resistance Where appropriate, for IT equipment.
Protective conductor Current Gently measures the current using the protective conductor (Earth), a lot of IT and some other equipment does allow this during normal operation.
Touch current Measures the current that could flow through a person who touches accessible surfaces.
Functional checks To see that the equipment actually works, as well as being safe!
We inspect and tests all your electrical equipment, from your kettle to your photocopier.
Any item found to be unsafe, if possible, will be made safe straight away. This will be done by one of the complimentary minor repairs we offer.
Be aware that in other circumstances it will be by ensuring it cannot be connected to the electrical supply by clearly marking it and informing you of our decision
After our visit we will send an information file for your records. In it are details of user checks, a site certificate for display, a detailed list of the items and a detailed list of the test results. You can have this information on CD too if you want. It's important you keep these records. We will upload them to our instruments if you choose us to test for you in the future. If you choose someone else, they will need to see that information before starting work.
Fixed Installation
We are required to remind you that your fixed installation (the wiring in your buildings) requires inspection and testing as well as your appliances. As we specialise in PAT testing this is not a service we offer but can recommend contractors who do if you require.
